BC Transit launches tap-to-pay on all systems with Umo

Contactless fare payment is now available on more than 30 transit systems across B.C.

BC Transit said on Tuesday that riders can now tap their debit card, credit card or mobile wallet to pay in all transit systems that use the Umo app.

“This gives our riders more choice and flexibility, whether you’re commuting, taking an occasional trip, visiting B.C. or getting home safely after a night out,” said BC Transit President Erinn Pinkerton in a statement.

The agency said contactless taps will charge for a single-ride adult fare. Riders who pay special fares, like youth or seniors, should continue to use the Umo app, a reloadable card or cash.

Riders will still get all the privileges available in their transit system, like fare transfers or capped daily fares, as long as the same card is used each time.

BC Transit recommends tapping just a single card rather than holding a wallet up to the onboard reader, which could result in multiple cards being charged for one ride.

The agency also notes that cards can’t be shared between riders.
