Penticton drug alert warns of highly potent opioid and tranquilizer mixture

A drug alert has been issued in Penticton for a drug sold as Down, Dope, Tranq or fentanyl that contains a combination of substances linked to a high risk of overdose.

Testing found the sample contained cychlorphine, medetomidine, etizolam, fentanyl and fluorofentanyl. The substance is described as dark purple or dark pink chunks.

Health officials say cychlorphine is a potent synthetic opioid believed to be significantly stronger than fentanyl. Early research suggests it may be long-acting, with effects that can last up to 48 hours.

The sample also contains medetomidine, a powerful non-opioid tranquilizer that can affect the heart. Officials warn that both medetomidine and cychlorphine can slow or stop breathing, increasing the risk of fatal drug poisoning.

People who use the substance may also experience nausea, vomiting and sweating, particularly at higher doses.

Anyone who suspects an opioid overdose should administer naloxone and call 911 immediately.

Officials are encouraging people to have drugs checked before use. Drug-checking services are available seven days a week through ASK Wellness. More information is available by calling or texting 250-328-9619.

Additional harm-reduction advice includes:

  • Avoid mixing drugs with alcohol or other substances.
  • Use drugs with other people present or at an overdose prevention site.
  • Start with a small amount and wait before taking more.
  • Space out doses.
  • Carry naloxone and know how to use it.
  • Call 211 or visit bc211.ca to find local services.
  • Find drug-checking locations at drugchecking.ca.
  • Download the LifeGuard app at lifeguarddh.com.

The alert remains in effect until June 11, 2026.
