Those in the Osoyoos area experienced historic heat Tuesday as the temperature reached 39.2 C, setting a new record.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the preliminary high of 39.2 C surpassed the previous record for the date of 39.1 C, set in 2006. Weather records for the area have been kept since 1954.
The record came during a period of unusually hot weather caused by a ridge of high pressure over southern B.C. Environment and Climate Change Canada issued heat warnings for parts of the region ahead of the hot spell, forecasting temperatures well above seasonal averages.
Meteorologists said temperatures are expected to ease later this week as the ridge weakens and cooler air moves into the region.
