Six presumed drowned after fishing vessel sinks near Richmond

RCMP said six people are presumed drowned after a commercial fishing charter boat sank in the Salish Sea near Richmond.

After an extensive search on Sunday, June 28, four men and two women remained unaccounted for and search efforts shifted to a recovery operation.

“The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) has been engaged and will attend the area in the coming days to locate the capsized vessel using sonar,” said RCMP.

“Their assessment of the conditions will determine whether a dive operation is feasible, or whether alternate resources, such as a remotely operated vehicle (ROV, aka underwater drone), may be required.”

Police said they believe the vessel sank in deep water and the cause is still under investigation.

Officers are also working to confirm the identities of the missing people and notify their families.

Two people, aged 33 and 28, remain in critical condition after being rescued from the water. Police said a 26-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman have been discharged from hospital.
