Free transit for Earth Day in South Okanagan

BC Transit and its local government partners said free transit will be offered on select routes in the South Okanagan-Similkameen Transit System to mark Earth Day on April 22, 2026.

The free service will apply to Penticton routes only, including both fixed-route buses and handyDART.

Earth Day highlights the importance of sustainability and encourages people to make choices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment. BC Transit said taking public transit is one way residents can help lower emissions in their communities.

The agency said the initiative is supported locally by the City of Penticton and is part of broader efforts across B.C. to promote environmentally friendly transportation.

BC Transit said it continues to work toward CleanBC climate action goals through its low-carbon fleet program, which focuses on modernizing vehicles and reducing emissions.

As part of those efforts, BC Transit is delivering Phase 1 of its electric bus project, which will see 125 electric buses deployed across eight transit systems, including Kelowna and other communities across the province.

The agency said it is also working to procure heavy-duty hybrid buses to further reduce emissions.
