CBSA reports major opium seizure at B.C. facility

Canadian border officials said they seized more than half a tonne of opium at a B.C. inspection facility earlier this year.

The Canada Border Services Agency said on Tuesday the seizure happened on January 14 at the Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility in Delta.

The agency said the shipping container had been referred to border services officers for examination by CBSA intelligence officials and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

It said officers found 520.6 kilograms of opium had been hidden deep inside 10 industrial-sized rolls of paper within the container.

“This seizure of more than half a tonne of opium is the result of strong collaboration and ongoing intelligence sharing between CBSA and U.S. partners,” said federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree in a statement.
