The B.C. government said Tumbler Ridge will host an event connected to the FIFA World Cup in June.
The province said Tuesday the small northeastern B.C. community will host a free event June 15 featuring watch parties and other entertainment to celebrate the tournament.
The announcement comes after the community was rocked by a Feb. 10 mass shooting that left six children and two adults dead, as well as the suspect.
“We are honoured to help create a moment of shared connection for the community of Tumbler Ridge, bringing the excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and a chance to create new memories,” said Anne Kang, B.C.’s minister of tourism, arts, culture and sport.
The province said in a release the event programming will be “respectful” and guided by community members.
“Over the past few months, our community has continued to support one another, and this event will provide an opportunity for people to gather, spend time together and enjoy a positive experience close to home,” said Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka in a statement.
B.C. plans to contribute $25,000 toward the event from its Community Event Support Fund and said it will offset additional planning and operational supports for the District of Tumbler Ridge.
The federal government is also providing $25,000 for the event.
Tumbler Ridge will be the seventh B.C. community to host an official “Canada Celebrates” FIFA event, along with Fort St. John, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Revelstoke, Nelson and Cranbrook.
More than two dozen other B.C. communities are also receiving provincial funding for soccer-themed events and watch parties.
Vancouver’s BC Place is set to host seven World Cup matches, with the first scheduled for June 13.
