The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen says residents want recreation facilities to remain a priority as the future of the Similkameen Community Pool and Ice Arena is considered.
The RDOS has released results from a feasibility study examining options for the aging facilities. More than 400 surveys were completed during a public engagement process held this summer.
According to the findings, nearly 90 per cent of respondents said the community pool provides value to the region, while almost 80 per cent said maintaining an arena is important. More than 88 per cent said recreation facilities should remain a community priority.
Residents also expressed support for replacing the pool and relocating it to the Similkameen Recreation Centre site, creating a centralized recreation hub.
Based on the feedback, consultants and RDOS staff have recommended what’s known as Option A. The proposal would see a new 25-metre outdoor pool and pool building constructed at the recreation centre site, while grant funding opportunities continue to be pursued for future arena renewal.
No final decisions have been made. The RDOS Board has directed staff to include the option for consideration in its 2027 strategic planning process.
Further public engagement, design work and cost analysis are expected before any project moves ahead.
