Penticton RCMP are asking for witnesses and video as investigators work to determine what started the Bald Range wildfire near Summerland.
BC Wildfire Service mapped the fire at 15,590 hectares Monday, up nearly 2,000 hectares from Sunday morning.
Police said Monday their General Investigative Services team began investigating Aug. 7 after reports of the fast-moving wildfire.
Police also addressed videos circulating on social media showing a man setting off what RCMP described as a non-lethal wildlife deterrent device, commonly known as a bear banger.
Investigators said they have identified the man, who is considered a witness, not a suspect.
RCMP said the incident shown in the video happened kilometres away from the fire’s origin area.
Investigators are examining reports of suspicious activity that may have played a role in the fire and want to speak with anyone who saw activity near Princeton-Summerland Road and Bathville Road, including around Crump Recreation Site and Trout Creek Recreation Site.
RCMP are seeking dashcam footage, videos, photos or other information from the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 7.
Police cautioned the public against spreading misinformation or making false statements about the investigation on social media.
RCMP said the evacuation order for the District of Summerland is in effect. Officers, with help from neighbouring detachments and natural resource officers, are patrolling evacuated areas and checking properties and businesses.
Police said access restrictions are being strictly enforced at checkpoints and through patrols.
RCMP said one man was arrested inside the Summerland evacuation order area Sunday afternoon. Police did not say why he was arrested or provide further details in the release.
