Premier David Eby says New Democrat MLA Joan Phillip is “very ill.”
Eby provided the update on Phillip’s health Wednesday in brief comments to reporters at the legislature, and didn’t provide further details.
Phillip is an Indigenous leader and activist who was elected to the legislature in 2023. She serves as the Parliamentary Secretary for Community Development and Non-Profits.
She is married to Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the B.C. Union of Indian Chiefs.
“Joan is an incredible fighter, she always has been” said Eby.
“I am asking that British Columbians pray for Joan and for her family right now, for a quick recovery, and send their best wishes to the Grand Chief and to all their grandchildren and their extended family during this really difficult time,” said Eby.
The B.C. NDP caucus issued a statement in December that Phillip was “experiencing some health issues” and would be undergoing some tests.
Since then, Philip has been participating in legislature votes virtually. However, she was not present for proceedings on Wednesday.
