Cougar sighting in Summerland neighbourhood

A cougar was spotted in a residential area of Summerland, prompting a response from the South Okanagan Conservation Officer Service.

Officers said the animal was found treed and is being monitored. It has not shown any signs of aggression or conflict. This type of behaviour is considered normal and defensive, and the cougar is believed to have been chased into the tree by nearby dogs.

Warning signs have been posted in the area. The public is asked to stay away to allow the cougar to leave safely on its own.

Anyone who encounters wildlife in a conflict situation is asked to call the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277 to help officers respond with accurate information.

Cougar safety tips

  • Stay calm and keep a safe distance.
  • Keep children and pets close and under control.
  • Do not run. Back away slowly while keeping the cougar in sight.
