Filming incidents raise concerns among Penticton businesses and residents

Concerns are growing among business owners and residents in Penticton and Kelowna after reports of an individual videotaping people and storefronts in what police describe as an intimidating manner.

Penticton RCMP said they received multiple complaints from members of the public and local businesses who described the behaviour as disturbing and disruptive.

The individual has told some people he is recording content for a podcast and YouTube channel focused on educating the public about laws around filming in public places; however, police said his intent remains unclear.

Business owners say the incidents have created unease for staff and customers, particularly when filming occurs at close range or during regular operations. Police said the individual is often seen wearing an orange high-visibility-style sweater.

RCMP is asking the public to remain aware of the situation and to report concerning behaviour. Police also advise people not to engage if they are approached or recorded in a way that feels intrusive.

“If this individual films you in a way that feels intrusive, disruptive or concerning, do not engage,” police said. “Instead, document the incident when it is safe to do so and report it.”

How to report:

  • If there is an immediate safety concern, call 911.

  • If there is no immediate safety concern, contact the Penticton RCMP non-emergency line at 250-492-4300.
