The B.C. RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia after a police incident in Penticton left a man in hospital with serious injuries.
Penticton RCMP officers responded Tuesday at about 4:24 a.m. to a report of mischief in progress involving a man allegedly smashing windows near Lakeshore Drive and Winnipeg Street.
Police said an interaction occurred between a responding officer and the suspect, during which a conducted energy weapon was deployed. The officer requested immediate assistance and additional officers attended.
Police said the suspect was later pinned between a police vehicle and a retaining wall.
The man received medical assistance at the scene before being taken to hospital with serious injuries.
One officer was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is investigating police actions in the incident. The area was cordoned off while investigators examined the scene.
Penticton RCMP is conducting a concurrent investigation into the actions of the suspect.
Police said no further information will be released while the IIO BC investigation continues.
